I'm going to Prague!!!

Hello

Yep I'm off to prague! It's kinda random, and now the intial excitement had worn off a bit, I'm ever so slightly thinking...ahhhh...what the hell am I doing!!!

Basically my friend from England, Emily sent me a message on facebook saying that she had brought an Interail pass and was going to be coming to Lille on Sat if I wanted to meet up. So I said that I wasn't doing anything and would love to meet up, did she have anywhere in mind that she wanted to go? (thinking that she might say either stay in Lille or go to Brussels or Bruges or somewhere!) She replied back saying that she was thinking of getting the overnight train to Prague and spending Sunday there, and I could come with her if I wanted to!! I didn't even know it was possible to get an overnight train to Prague!! And the important thing for me is that I have to be able to get back in time to work on Monday afternoon.

So I then spent the next few hours (bear in mind that I got her last message at just before midnight!!) trying to find out how to get ot Prague and if it was at all possible to do it and get back here by 13:30 on monday. And amazingly it is!! Unfortuantley it was also very expensive (over £180) so I wasn't to sure if I wanted to spend that much for 1 day. Then I had a look on the Interail pass site, since that is what Emily had got, and found that a pass valid for 10 days with 5 days travelling is £130! That covers most of the trains we wanted to take, we just have to pay a small supplement (about £30 each way) on the overnight train. Plus since it's valid for 5 days travel and the weekend is only 3, I can also use it to go to Bruges next wednesday, which is cool, it's kinda like an extra free trip!! And cos I still have another day, I can also use it to pay for my ticket from here to Lille when I come home next Friday, so I'd get my money's worth!

So this is our plan: I'm meeting Emily in Lille on Saturday at 12:30, We are then getting a train to Brussels and spending the afternoon in Brussels before getting a train at 19:25 to Colonge. We then get the Overnight train from Colonge, leaving at 22:38 and arriving in Prague at 9:33 Sunday morning. We then spend the day in Prague, before I (Emily is going to stay in Prague for a few more days and then go to Switzerland, before going back home) have to get the train at 18:50 back to Colonge arriving at 6:14 Monday morning, I then have to wait an hour and get the train back to Brussels, I then have 1.5 hours wait to get the train back to Lille. I get to Lille at 11h46 and I have an 1/2 hour wait to get the train back to Aulnoye. I get back here at 13:24. I'm meant to start work at 13h30...So I'm going to be a little bit late, but hopfully I can just dump my bag and pick up my stuff for school, and be there by about 13:50.

I am slightly worried about having to travel back on my own, and there is a small voice saying that it's a lot of money for what is esenstionally one day, I'm hopeing it will all be ok, and I'll have a great time. I'm trying to think of what clothes to bring, since i will kinda be in the same outfit from Saturday-Monday!! And also apparently it's snowing in Prague, so I'll need lots of layers!

I'm hoping to visit the castle, but other than that I really have no idea, I think we might just wander round and see what takes our fancy!!

Anyway will try and post more when I get back with pictures and stuff!!!

The Sunshine after the Rain!!

It got slightly better at the school today. I was in Joliot Currie, and I'd arranged to meet one of the English teachers to discuss what I could do. I'd already decided that I would read 'We're going on a Bear Hunt' to the children, and when I showed her she thought it would be a good idea. Unfortunately we didn't really get a chance to discuss what else I could do in detail, although I said that I could do something on Scotland for St Andrews Day, and then tell them about Christmas in England, so that takes us up to Christmas...not too sure what I'll be doing after that!

I'd done some Flashcards for the story to help them understand, (it's very hard to draw a snowstorm BTW!! and I couldn't draw a bear so I ended up sticking the word Bear on my teddy!!!) And the teacher held them up as I was reading. They managed to understand almost all of it, I was really impressed, (of course My Wonderful Acting probably helped!!) After the teacher was teaching them about Numbers, and getting them to say their phone numbers in English, she wanted me to give them an English number, the first one I thought of was my home!!! Oh well if Mum and Dad start getting weird phone calls that'll be why!!! Then she started teaching them how to tell the time, she tried to teach them 'Hickory Dickory Dock' but she had forgotten the CD, so guess who stepped in!! I even managed to do actions for it!!! I didn't even know I knew actions, it was just as they were saying it , I thought of them!! I asked Kathryn, and apparently they are the same as the ones she does in the nursery!!! Slightly weird!!

Anyway I did the story again with the next class, It was with a different teacher, and I hadn't actually managed to speak to her about it beforehand, I just walked in the class and said I have a story, I meant to ask 'Can I do it?' but I think I might have said 'I am doing it!!' She didn't mind though, and so I did it with her class too!

Then it was breaktime, I went outside, and immediately had about 10 kids running over, asking if i was going to play...I didn't actually realise that was what they said, but they looked so happy when I said yes..that I was kinda stuck! It was really sweet though, they played a really nice game where half of us stood in a circle, and chose a number, then we counted while the others ran in and out, when we said our chosen number we sat down, and anyone in the circle was trapped!! It was really fun, and I even managed to get some of them to count in English!!!

After breaktime, the class that I had been with earlier was going swimming, so I went into the CE1 class (6-7 years olds) they don't really start learning English until next year, but they really like me, and they know a little bit (hello, goodbye) I asked the teacher if I could read the story, even though it was in English. She said I could. I don't think they really understood all of it, but they liked listening to it, and looking at the pictures. Then the teacher asked if I knew any English Christmas songs, so I taught them Jingle Bells! It was really sweet to hear them try singing it! After, I was thinking about how the kids were really interested in me teaching them English, (but I knew that they weren't meant to start learning properly till next year) but I asked the teacher if I would be able to maybe teach them a little bit of English on Thursday afternoon, She thought it was a great idea, but we had to check with the Headmaster...He said it was a good idea too, (especially as the alternative is me sitting doing nothing!!!!) SO now every other Thursday afternoon from 3:30-4:15 I get to teach the little Kids...it's great because I have Tuesday from 3:30-4:30 free as well, so I can plan my lessons then, and on Wednesday If i need too! Yeah finally have something to do!!!

And Mum is coming tomorrow, and we're going to the Christmas Market in Lille....YEAY I can finally get out of here!!!!

See everything always works out in the end!!!

Love

A Much Happier Becca!!!

The Strikes continue....

This is the view out of my window, there are currently at least 6 trains in the station...they are not going anywhere...just sitting there...teasing me. The assistants in Valenciennes were having a Thanksgiving Dinner today...I couldn't go because I couldn't get there. I really hope this strike ends soon. I really can't deal with another day sitting here doing nothing!!

SOOOOO Bored!!!!

Well it's now Sunday, The trains are still on strike, so I haven't be able to go anywhere. I was invited to go out to dinner with the other assistants in Valenciennes last night, unfortunately I couldn't get there, and so was stuck here instead.

OK, I'll warn you now, this is going to be a bit of a moany post. I'm just sooo bored, I actually don't know what I doing here. This isn't exactly the great 'Adventure' I imagined it would be, it just almost like I'm stuck here, waiting until May when I can go home again. I read the other assistants blogs, and they've all be having a great time, travelling, seeing new places etc. I have been to three new places in France since I've been here, Lille, Valenciennes and Aulnoye. That's it, I haven't done any travelling, and visited lots of new and exciting places or anything.

Even in the schools I really have no idea what I am doing there. Take this week for example, Normally I prefer working in Ecole Stievenart, but when I arrived on Monday afternoon, the teacher explained, that as the children were making something for the Christmas market in a few weeks, They wouldn't be doing as much English. Great!!! This meant that I spent the whole of Monday afternoon sitting at the back of the class doing nothing. I'm not even too sure what they were making, so I couldn't help or anything. The only thing that stopped me going completely bored, was that I could listen to the French, and watch the children. I the had Tuesday and Wednesday off, and I was stuck here.

I went into school on Thursday, early, armed with my books, and my play, with the intention of sitting down and talking to the teacher about what I could do. Well firstly the teacher wasn't there, she came in about 10 minutes later, with her daughter, who goes to the nursery school, so she was sorting her out, I managed to quickly show her the books, but she said she thought 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' might be too difficult for the children to understand. Then she went to take her daughter to the Nursery. I hadn't had a chance to show her the play, and at that moment I didn't really see the point. When she came back, I spoke to her again about the Bear Hunt story explaining that I didn't really think it would be too difficult, cos it's mostly repeating. She had another look, and agreed that maybe it would be OK. I then showed her the 'Jesus' Christmas Party' Story, I wasn't sure if she'd agree with it, but she had a look, and took a copy of it. I'm not sure if we can do it as a play, but maybe I can get some of the children to act it out whilst I read it. Mum has sent me the actual book, so I can use that too. I didn't really get much of a chance to talk to her though, because then it was the end of lunch break and the children were coming back. So I resumed my position at the back of the class just watching.

I did however go into one English lesson, but I didn't do anything. At one point the teacher was explaining about Bonfire Night, and I had the chance to jump up and show the children my pictures quickly. But that was it. After I sat down and went back to doing nothing. At the end of the day the teacher explained, that they wouldn't be doing any English on Friday, because the class were going to the library. On Friday morning, I wasn't feeling very well, in fact I was sick a few times. I really didn't feel up to going into the school, and after I remembered that they weren't actually going to be doing any English anyway, I really didn't see the point. I sent an e-mail to the school, saying I was sorry, but I was sick and wouldn't be coming in, and went back to bed!!

On Saturday, I was feeling slightly better, but I was also feeling a bit guilty for not going in the day before, so I made sure I got up and was in school by 8:30am! In all honesty there was actually no point to me being there at all. I spent the 1st 2 hours sitting at the back of the class, doing absolutely nothing, and then at 10:40 the teacher said we were going to go into another class to do an English lesson. I walked into the class, said 'Good Morning' to the children, and sat down. Half an hour later, I stood up, said 'Goodbye' and walked out again.

The worst thing is, I really don't know how to change this, I don't know what else I can say or do, I don't see how I can be of any use, when I don't know what is going on. I don't have anytime to actually talk to the teachers about it, I might possibly see the teachers for about 10-15 mins before the afternoon lessons start, but that it, and most of the time, they are using that time to planned lessons themselves. They don't really need me to come hassling them.

I'm in Ecole Joilot Currie this week. I have a few ideas about Christmas, which I want to talk the teachers about, but I still have no idea what else they are doing. So I guess I'm going to spend more time sitting at the back of the classroom, doing nothing....oh joy!!!

The only bright spark on the horizon is that Mum and her friend, are coming out to visit next weekend. They are coming in the car, so they can bring over some Christmas things for me to show the children. On Saturday we are going to go to the Christmas Market in Lille. I can't wait, not least because it means I will finally be getting out of the town!! On Sunday, we can go anywhere I want, before they drive home again...I haven't actually got any ideas....but anywhere outside of this town will be great!!!

OK I just re-read this post, and it sounds as if I am really unhappy here. That's not totally true, I am not unhappy....I'm just not that happy!!!

OK positive thinking, I'm sure it will get better soon!!!

More later!!

Stuck in the middle of nowhere!!!

For those of you who haven't seen or heard on the news, the French railway personal have decided to go on strike. And when French people go on strike, they don't mess around, everything stops. Like most towns across France, there have been no trains to or from Aulnoye station at all today. Therefore I am now stuck here, not only are there no trains, there are also no buses either (the bus drivers go on strike too, in support of the train workers.)

Luckily, (or unluckily depending on how you look at it!!) I can walk to the schools, so unlike most of the assistants living in Valenciennes I can still get to work. Unfortunately today is Wednesday, and I don't work Wednesdays. My plan had been to go into Valenciennes to meet up with some of the assistants, but obviously that didn't happen, so I'm stuck here staring at these four walls for another day!! I really hope the stupid drivers have decided to go back to work by the weekend so I can hopefully meet up with them all. I think that the strike is only for today, but apparently some trains might still not be running tomorrow, and it might even go on till next week!! Oh joy!! Also, so I read earlier, some teachers are meant to be going on strike as well on Tuesday, so I'll have to check whether that's the case at Joilot Currie, If so, I'll have an extra day off, but if the trains are still on strike, I won't be able to go anywhere!!! Grrrr!!!

I must admit it is quite funny that the day the french transport system goes on strike, is the same day that Eurostar open it's new high speed railway line from St Pancras, so now u can get to France even quicker then ever before...but then you can't go anywhere after that!!

Anyway because of the strikes I have spent the last 2 days here doing absolutely nothing, (well I did my washing yesterday...very exciting!!) I've changed the days that I work at Ecole Stievenart, so I now work Mondays instead of Tuesdays. Which means that I have 2 days off, then work one day, then have another 2 days off. I never thought I'd complain about having so much free time...but I'm so bored!!! It's almost a relief to go into the schools, it gives me something to do for 3 hours!!

Saying that, I get the idea that the teachers at Joilot Currie, still don't know what to do with me. I was meant to start work at 10 on Thursday, but I went to the school, and it was locked, I couldn't get in. I waited about 20 mins, and I still couldn't get in, so I gave up and came back to the flat. I was good though and spent the next hour finding out some facts about Bonfire night to go with the pictures that Dad took at Aunt Trish's bonfire night party last weekend. I went back to the school to get the coach to go to lunch. As I was getting on the coach, one of the children asked what my Poppy was, (I was wearing it on my jacket) That gave me an idea, so while I was eating lunch I wrote some notes about Remembrance day to tell the children. It was quite funny, I'd forgotten how protective the French are of the lunch, and I got some strange looks from the children and teachers, for writing while eating!! I didn't mind it gave me something to do!!

When I got back to the school I saw one of the teachers. I showed her what I'd done, and she said that she'd already done something on bonfire night before the holiday, but she said I could show the photos and tell the children about Remembrance Day, However she thought that they might not understand if I just explained it in English, so she explained it in French as well. I then sat at the back for the rest of the lesson. In the 2nd lesson with the other teacher it was a bit better, I got to explain about Bonfire night and Remembrance Day, the teacher summarised what I said in French, and even wrote a few sentences on the board, so they copied them down. By the time they'd done that it was the end of the lesson! Unfortunately they still really don't know what to do with me after the English lessons. I was meant to stay for another hour, and the class I was with were going swimming. I'm still not sure whether the teacher actually goes swimming as well, but even so I am a rubbish swimmer and don't really like it, and so the teacher, just said, oh go over to that classroom you can sit in there. So over I went. The teacher had no idea who I was, or what I was doing there, so I just had to sit in the class. I'm still not sure what class it was, I think it might have been a SEN class, cos it was kinda mixed ages, and the work was quite simple. It was fairly interesting, but I just don't know why I was there!

On Friday, I had to go into Lille to meet up with my tutor, (well I say my tutor, she's actually a new tutor at the uni, I have never met her before) To start with I was a hour late, cos I missed the train (don't worry I did text her and tell her, and she was fine with it) Jade was there to, and as I hadn't seen her since we have been here, It was nice to see her. The tutor had brought a friend with her, and so they were speaking french (obviously) We walked around Lille, trying to find a restaurant. I wasn't actually very hungry, and we walked for ages in the freezing cold.We eventually found a restaurant, (and like all restaurants in France, a no-smoking table, basically just means one without an ashtray!! So I ended up having smoke all around me almost the whole time) I ordered chicken, mainly cos it was the only thing on the menu, that I was actually sure what it was! We had to speak in French the whole time, which was really hard, especially for me having only just come back from England, but I tried my best. The really annoying thing though was when the tutor told me and Jade that we had to speak french to each other. It was so stupid, cos we were talking about student loans and the fact that we weren't meant to be paying fees, so we were using English words and things, apparently when we spoke French to each other we both lost the French accent entirely, and were just speaking French, but with a completely English accent!! The tutor's friend couldn't understand us, cos we sounded so English!!! I'm not sure how well it went, but at least I got a day out and a free lunch, so that was good!

Well this has been a really long post, (as usual!!) but at least it has given me something to do! I'm working in Ecole Stievenart tomorrow, and I'm hoping to go in early to discuss a few ideas with the teacher. I have a few children's books to read to them, and I had the idea the other day of seeing if I could do a little play with the children. The play I was thinking of is a Nativity play based on the story of Jesus' Christmas Party. It should be OK, because it's quite simple, and is mostly acting, rather than lots of words. I am slightly worried though because I know the French have this thing about teaching Religion in schools (i.e they don't have anything religious!) and so it might be seen as being too religious, but I'm hoping that if I explain that it's traditional for Primary schools in England to put on a Nativity Play each year, then I might be able to do it as a cultural point about England!!!

Will keep you updated!!

Remembrance Sunday in Aulnoye

I really wanted to post this dated the 11 November, but I didn't realise the time, so unfortunately it's come under the 12th November. (therefore as it's just after midnight, when I say today, I mean the 11th, not the 12th!)

I went to the Remembrance service in Aulnoye today. I wasn't even sure if they would even have one, I'd tried to find out, but hadn't managed to find anything, so my plan was just to walk to the war memorial around 10:45 to see if anything was going on. In the end I got woken at 10:20 by the band matching past my window!!! I moved sooo fast, jumped up, got dressed, and was out the door in about 5 mins!! Luckily the parade had stopped outside the Station so I was able to catch up with it there. It was a bit different to the parade in Ashford, Much much smaller, there weren't any guides or scouts! Instead there was the band, followed by the firefighters, and the junior firefighting corps, the some representatives from the nearby steel factory, the station and old soldiers carrying flags (only about 6 though) and then some of the children from Joilot Currie, then the rest of the town followed behind. We walked to the War Memorial for the service there. I couldn't really understand what was being said, the guy speaking was speaking quite fast, but I got the general idea. The only had 1 minutes silence at 11am though, either that or it was a very very quick two minutes!! There was no Last Post or Reveille, although they did lower the flags, in fact the only way I realise it was over, when they raised them again!! Then the children sang the French National anthem, unfortunately it was raining, and they were quite quiet so I couldn't really hear them, which was a shame.

Then everyone started leaving the memorial, I thought it was the end, but then the band started playing again, I wasn't to sure if it was like in Ashford where the band plays again afterwards, and we just parade back to the start, but everyone was following them, so I followed.

We walked a little bit further up the road to the town cemetery, I walk this way to Ecole Joilot Currie, but what I hadn't noticed before was that at the back of the cemetery there were some British war graves. As we approached I saw the Union Flag flying from the flagpole (I'm almost positive it wasn't there when I walked past on Thurs, or else I was really stupid not to notice it!!) The cemetery is quite small so we had to stand outside in the road, whilst the children went in and put flowers on each of the graves. The band then played 'God Save the Queen' I must admit because I wasn't expecting it, it took me a couple of seconds to work out why I recognised it!! Afterwards they played the French Anthem again and then we continued walking round to the 'Hotel de Ville' (Town Hall) where they ended the service. In total, (bearing in mind I missed the beginning) It was about an hour long, so it was longer than in Ashford, but it didn't really seem that long cos we moved around. After people were going into the Town Hall, so I went in, they had a kinda reception thing, with drinks and nibbles, but as I hadn't had breakfast I turned down the glass of wine! The mayor, (or someone from the town council anyway!) then made a speech to say thank you to everyone which seemed to go on for ages! I left about 11:45 initially I intended to go back to the flat to see if I could watch/listen to the service in London online, but as I walked past the cemetery I decided to have a look.

There were 44 graves, 43 identified and 1 unknown soldier. What was quite surprising was that they were all from 1918, and in fact 21 were killed on the 6-8th November 1918. Almost spookily 8 of the 21 were from the Middlesex Regiment, which considering I live in Ashford, Middlesex, makes it one of the Regiments that would have been based closest to my home. It was so bizarre to be standing in a cemetery, in a small town, in the middle of France, and see Middlesex written on a gravestone. I mean I know WWI was fought in this area, but I was just thinking of all the main battlefields like the Somme, Ypres, Flanders, you know the ones we learnt about in school. I never imagined finding graves in a tiny town such as Aulnoye.

As I was standing there I heard the clock tower strike 12, (i.e 11am in England) so I had my own little 2 minutes silence, thinking about these men that had come through the town 89 years ago and those who would never return home. I was still wearing my poppy and so just before I left I took it off and placed it at the foot of the grave of the Unknown Soldier. (I got it when I was at home, they don't have poppies in France) It just felt like the right thing to do, my little way of saying Thank you, and Remembering the men who died here.

I was thinking about the men who died, particularly those who had died in the final days of the war, and I really wanted to know why they had died, what they were doing in Aulnoye. So when I got back to the flat I looked it up online. I managed to find a really detailed website about the 1st Battalion Middlesex Regiment (which was the one the 8 soldiers belonged to) which said that the 6-8th Nov 1918 was the Battle of the Sambre. (The Sambre is the river just to the north of Aulnoye separating it from the town of Berlimont) The Germans had held Aulnoye since 1914, making particular use of the railway line to bring supplies in to the front line, and so on the 6th Nov 1918 there were still a number of German troops stationed here. The British troops had to get across the river from Berlimont, and although they tried at night, they were met with Machine-gun fire, and several soldiers were killed. They eventually made it into Aulnoye, and assembled in front of the station. It's so weird to think that 89 years ago there were British troops fighting right here where I am now! The next day the Battalion advanced on the road towards Avesnes but were met with shell fire and another 4 soldiers were killed, one of whom Lieut. W.L Hudspith had fought since 1914. The rest of the Battalion reached their objective, and then were relieved at 4am on the 8th Nov, when they came back to Aulnoye before marching on to Sassegnies, a tiny village just south of here, where they stayed until receiving news of the Armistice.

Sorry I know that was a bit of a history lesson, but I found it really interesting, I thought it was especially sad that the soldiers died right at the very end of the war, in fact during the very last advance that the Battalion made toward the Germans. 24 hours later and it was all over for them. The fact that some had fought throughout the whole war, only to die right at the end, is really sad.

It's strange, every year I take part in Remembrance day parade, and I can see the list of names inscribed on the War Memorial, but that's all it is...a list of names. To actually take a name from a grave and find out how old they were, where they lived, where they fought, and where they died, makes it more real. It's not just a name anymore, but an actual person who walked the same streets I do, and died in this town fighting for Britain.

Anyway, sorry for wittering on, this is rather a long post, and it is now 2:45am so I'd better get to sleep or else I'll be late for work tomorrow (even if I start at 1:30!) I'll update again soon with how it's going in the schools and stuff.

I do also have some photos from today, but for some reason blogger won't let me post them, so I'll add them later.

Back in good old England!!

Hello

I know I haven't updated for a while, I've been quite busy. Well as you may be able to guess from the title, I didn't go travelling round France, because the Americans I was going to go with decided not to go. So faced with 10 days with nothing to do I decided to come home for a week. It wasn't an easy decision, considering that Dad and Natasha had come out especially to see me, and so I wouldn't have to come home, plus I was worried that it will be hard to get back in to the 'French mode de vie' I was just about beginning to feel settled, and now It's all messed up again. I've had fun at home, and I'm glad I came, but it's weird.

I've settled back into being at home so quickly, It feels as though the last 6 weeks have been a bit of a dream, and they didn't really exist. I've completely lost the tiny bit of french I had managed to retain (I was just starting to sometimes think in French) But now I'm completely back to English again. To be honest, I don't really want to go back. I've loved having my family round, and having dinner with them, and being able to watch TV in the evenings. It's exactly what I was worried about, I guess I just have to wait and see what happens when I do go back.

To make matters worse my tutor from uni is coming to see me on Friday. I knew that we would have to meet with the tutor at some point in the year, but I thought it would be at least Jan/Feb time. When we meet the tutor we have to have a discussion in French. Not only does she want to know how I am doing, but also we have to talk about 'current affairs'....I have absolutely no idea what is going on in France at all. Not only because I have been at home all week, but also because even when I was in France, I didn't actually read any french newspapers or anything. I listened to English radio, and went on English websites. In fact I have hardly spoke french at all! It's really bad, I need to speak more french but I don't know how. I know I should probably be listening to French radio or something, but I love my Radio 1, It's like a little security blanket, a reminder of home.

OK, New resolution...Will try to speak more French (possibly,maybe...If i have time!!!)

Right g2g, but will try to update at the weekend,

Rebecca

My Room

Yeay I finally have internet, which should meen I can update more often (possibly!!) So as promised I have uploaded some photos of my room so you can see what it looks like!

As you can see it's small, but nice enough for me, and yes my kitchen is in a cupbord!! Plus I have a lovely view of the train station!!!

Well quick update on what I'm doing, I've been at Ecole Joilot Currie this week, which was totally different to Ecole Stievenart. For starters it's a lot bigger and so there are more classes, secondly it seemed that the teachers really didn't know what to do with me! Even in the English lessons, they only wanted me to introduce myself, (I had the map and things with me) So I managed to use some of what the teacher had said the week before to explain about the UK etc. But it was just sorta tacked onto the lesson, rather than being part of it like at the other school. The teacher uses tapes of english words so the children know how to pronounce the words. I have to say even at the end of two weeks observations, I am still not sure really what I am meant to be doing!!! It was quite nice on thursday because I got to go into the CE1 class (6-7 year olds) and they don't really learn english, but the teacher wanted me to tell the children about England and the UK. I had to do it all in French which was intresting, especially when I was talking about English things like Fish and Chips, but had to say it in French, and sometimes I forgot and said it in English! Like I said c'est le flag Anglais, insted of c'est le drapeau Anglais!! The children were really sweet though, and had all thought of some questions for me, they were really intrigeied by the idea that British children have to wear uniforms to school!!

Talking of English flags, I'm gonna need mine tonight, gonna into Valenciennes to watch the World Cup final, I wasn't going to go, but having been listening to Radio1 all day and they have been building up to it, so I decided that I couldn't miss it. I'm staying at the house of one of the other English assistants, I met last week. It should be a good laugh, and a chance to see all the other assistants again. Come on England!!!

Then on Sunday I'm going into Lille to meet Dad and Natasha, I'm so excited to see them!! They are staying untill wednesday, but I am working Tuesday afternoon, but it will still be great to see them, and we can go out monday and Wednesday morning!!

I feel so much more settled now that I have the internet, and can keep in touch with people. I can't believe I have been here nearly a month already...only 2 months till I get to go home for Christmas!!!!!

Thats all for now

A tout l'heure

Updates - Part Two

Ok So it suddenly got so much better after that (if you are reading this from the top, please scroll down to read the post below first, or else it won't mame any sense!!)

Well after I left the Internet cafe, last wednesday, I met one of the other American assistants, Kelly, She currently lives in Mauberge about 15mins from here, but she is hoping to find a place to live in Valenciennes, so she had just been to look at a flat, and she was just going to the station to get the train back, so I walked with her. We both got on the train, and we swaped numbers so we could arrange to meet up again. When we got to Aulnoye the train stoped for a while, I got off, and when I got to my flat the train was still in the station, then I saw the 1st 2 coaches pull away! It turns out that only the front coaches were going to Mauberge, and Kelly was on the 3rd coach! She then had an 1/2 wait until the next train, So she came up and saw my flat, and had a cup of tea while she waited! It was really nice to speak to someone else in english for a change.

The thursday and Friday were so much better in the school too. We actually did english lessons! it was really nice, the teacher introduced me, and then she showed them my map of the UK and explained (in french) about how the UK was made up of 4 countries and England was just one of the 4. Then she had some Photos of British things, (like Big Ben, Cricket, Pounds, Cup of tea etc) and French things, (like The Eiffel Tower, Boules, Euro, Wine etc) and the children had to guess if the thing was British or French. They seemed to really enjoy it, and I think they liked seeing things that were different in Britan! Finally I showed them some British money, they loved finding the Queens head in the back of the coins!! In the end, I did the same lesson with the 7-9 year olds, then the 6-7 year olds, then the 9-11 year olds, except with the older children the teacher got the children to name other counties that spoke english, and then they had pictures of american things as well!

On Friday afternoon, I got a text from Kelly saying that she was going to go to Valenciennes to meet up with some other assistants, did I want to go? I said yes, but because I had school on Sat I had to get the last train back to Aulnoye, which unfortunatly was 10pm! I met some of the assistants, and they said that they were going to be watching the Rugby, (gotta stop, lunch break is over, will go to internet cafe afterschool to finish!)

Right so school has finished now, so I can continue, Yeah so some of the assistants said that they were going to be watching the rugby on sat, but the only way I would be able to, was if i could staty at someones flat Sat night cos the last train would be half way through the match!! Luckily one of the American assistants said that I could stay at his on Sat night. Unfortunatly since most of the assistants showed up at about 9:15 I didn't really get a chance to meet them all, cos I had to go which was annoying.

So on Sat I had to get up to be at the school by 8;30 which was fun! The kids played Handball for about 1 hour, which was quite fun to watch, especially as most didn't seem to know the rules and were just making it up as they went along! Then I had another English lesson, which was quite fun, the teacher taught them how to say Good Morning, Good Afternoon, and Good Evening, and then she gave them all English names!! So now not only do i have to remember their actual names, but their English ones as well! In the afternoon I went swiming, I haven't been swimming for ages, forgot how hard it was!! But the hot tub and the shower afterwards was nice!! Then i was going to go on the Internet, but there were no spare computers, so I phoned Mum and Dad for a bit; Then, due to extreamly stupid train times on Saturdays, the only train I could get to Valenciennes left at 6:30, Luckily Michael (the american assistant I stayed with) was able to meet me at 7 and we got something to eat, before going to the bar, where everyone else was to watch the Rugby.

When we got there it was packed, mostly with French supporters, but the English assistants had got a little corner, with flags and stuff! Most of the american assistants decided to support France though, some even went as far as having french flags on their faces! (they felt pretty silly afterwards!!!) It was a really great atmosphere in the bar, i think my favourite bit was hearing the commentry even though it was all in rapid fire french, and the commentator only seemed to know one English player, Johnny Wilkenson!!! It was funny to hear the change in the tone of voice, from quite confident about 15mins before the end, to disbelief, and then sadness at the end!! Despite being massively outnumbered we still managed to get some chears going, and at the end the French were very nice, and some even came over and shook our hands, saying it was a good game, so that was nice. Afterwards we were all on a bit of a high, and walked arround Valennciennes for a bit, then a few people decided to go into another bar, so we went in there; it was really nice cos we could all sit down and talk so i got to meet about 15+ other assistants, and I made sure i got numbers of most of them. It was really werid going from not knowing anyone, to suddenly knowing a big crowd of people. They normally go out each weekend, and loads of people have said that I am welcome to stay on their floors over the weekend, which is good.

On Sunday a big group of us met up and went for lunch at Flunch, Which is a kinda fast food self service restruant, the food was really nice and quite cheap too, and it was great to be able to talk more with the people I met the night before. After lunch, because it was so hot and sunny, about 6 of us decided to go for a walk round the park. It was really nice in the sunshine with all the french families out and the kids playing and stuff. We walked arround Valencenniens for a bit, I've no idea where, but down all these little side streets and stuff, it's a really preaty town. Then i had to go to get the Train back to Aulnoye. I had a really good weekend, and I'll definatly be meeting up with them all again soon!

One of the things we were talking about, was what to do during our Toussaint holiday which is from 27th Oct- 7th Nov, quite a lot of the English assistants are going home, but i don't really want to, so I was wondering what the American assistants were going to do, a Few of them were planning to go to Toulouse for a week or so, so i might go with them.

I had orginally thought that Dad and Natasha were coming during the first few days of the Toussaint holiday, because I thought that was when Natasha's half term was. Apparently not, they are actually coming next sunday!! Luckily i am only working tuesday afternoon while they are here, so we should still be able to do the same things. i am still really looking forward to them coming, but now i have to work out whether I will be able to go to Valenciennes to watch the Rugby final, and still be able to meet them at the Train station on Sunday afternoon!!!

Well thats me up to date

Till the next time!

Updates - Part one

I know I'm rubish at updating this, but i've been really busy, so this update has to be in 2 parts, It's the only way to explain the sudden change in fortune I've had over the past week. In actual fact this post is a copy on an e-mail I sent to my friend last Wednesday, which explains how i was feeling at the time.

Wednesday 10th October

I'm currently in an internet café type thing in Valenciennes, (well I say café it's more somewhere for young people to find jobs and stuff, well thats what everyone else seems to be doing) and it's free, but only for 1 hour, so I don't have long. Valenciennes is a town about 1/2 hour away by train from Aulnoye, I ended up here, cos it's wednesday, and so the kids aren't in school, and I wanted something to do. In fact i've just spent the last 2 hours just wondering aimlessly round the town. I did manage to buy a landline phone, so at least when I get evrything set up, I'll actually have a phone to make calls on! But thats it! Theres no point me going into any shops cos i've barely got any money, I've got about €100 to last me till the end of the month!! Well I do have money in my English account but I was hoping to save that, just in case I don't get paid at the end of October, ( I should do but only if all the correct forms have been recieved by the head office in Lille by today. I filled them all in at the begining of last week, I just hope they all got sent off on time!) SO I was basically wondering whether I should either keep wondering round, or go back to Aulnoye, when I found this place! So now I have something to do for another hour yey!!!

I started work in the school yesterday, well I say work, all I actually did was sit in the back of the classroom "making notes" for 3 hours. They didn't even do any english lessons, they had maths and science lessons. The maths I just about managed to follow, but I had no idea what they were doing in science, It took me about 15mins to work out the were doing biology, and were talking about body parts!! I really have no idea how I suposed to be of any assistance to the teacher when I don't even know what it is they are doing!! I'm working again on Thursday afternoon, at least this time i think they are actually having an English lesson, Though it is their first lesson, so it's all in french anyway!

still haven't heard anything from the girls I met last week, so I think I'll be spending another weekend on my own Sat should be ok cos I'm working, and then I thought I'd go see what the Swiming pool is like, and then I can always go tot the internet café I found the other day for a bit, Sunday I have no idea what to do, cos EVERYTHING is shut on sunday, seriously in a town with very little to do anyway, sundays are even worse cos there is nothing to do. I was so bored last week I ended up cleaning the flat!! Hopefully by next weekend I should have internet, so I can have something to do.

I think that is the worse thing about being here, being on my own practically all the time, I meen the people in the office are nice enough, in fact eveyone I've met has been really really nice to me. But there is no one else I know who is my own age, even the other assistants live at least 15 min away by train, so it's not like I can just pop round to chat to them! I guess i'd gotten used to having people round me to talk to that being on my own is just a bit of a shock, i don't know, Right now I can't wait for Natasha and dad to come over during half term (she doesn't know yet so don't say anything!) not just cos I haven't seen them for ages, but also because it meens that for 3 whole days I'll actually have someone else to talk to!!!

Ok so thats how i was feeling last wednesday, Read the post above, to see how it all changed.......!

This is it.....My first steps into English teaching!!!

I know I haven't updated for a while, it's hard not having unlimated internet access, (but that is going to change my internet has been ordered (through Neuf) and should be up and running in the next 2 weeks!)

Anyway just a quick update about my timetable, I'm working in 2 schools, 1 one week, one the next. this way I get to teach all the classes. unfortunatley there aren't enough english clases for me to just assist in them, so I'm going to be assisting in other classes too! Though doing what, I have no idea!!!

I work this week in ecole Steivenart, tues, thurs and friday afternoon, and Sat morning, then next week in Ecole Joliot Curie, Monday and tuesday afternoon, All day Thursday and Friday morning. It meens that every other weekend I get a 4 day weekend, which is good if Iwant to go somewhere. (Unfortunatly the other weekend is just Sat afternoon and Sunday off, so not quite as good!!)

I'm spending the next 2 weeks observing the classes, so I can get an Idea of what I'm meant to be doing!! I start this afternoon in Ecole Steivenart. Finally after 2 weeks I'm doing what I came here to do!!!

Will update soon to let you know how it went.

I Don't keep a diary

There is a very good reason why I don't keep a diary, I am not very good at updating it! I had this great idea that I would keep a blog, (Which lets face it is a sort of web diary, isn't it) so I could let evryone know what I was up to in Frenchland. Well I hadn't quite counted on the fact that I wouldn't have unlimated internet access like i'd been used to, or just how long it would take to write each post, or how busy I would be in the 1st couple of weeks, that I wouldn't be able to update all the time. Hence the reaaon why "My First Week in France" only goes up to Tuesday, and it's now the following Thursday, and I've only just got round to updating. I'm going to try to do a (hopefully briefer) update of what I've been doing over the last week, otherwise it'll get silly qnd Ill never right in this blog!

Well Wednesday was mostly spent shopping for things for the appartment, (kettle, toaster, rugs, cutlery etc) as well as getting food for the next few weeks, so it was really good having Mum and Dad there to pay for everything!! We also went to a really nice Pizza Place in the evening, in the town, so at least thats one good thing in the town!

On Thursday Mum and Dad went home, I went with them to Lille and we spent some time walking around the town (mainly so Dad could refilm some of the town that had mysteriously dissapeared from the video camera!) We went to the supermarket so I could get a duvet and pillow, then Mum and Dad got on the Eurostar :'( and I came back to Aulnoye. I went to the office where the Brigette's worked so I could use the internet, which was good as it gave me something to do. I watched DVD's in the evening, although it was a bit lonely.

On Friday, I went to meet the teachers and children in the 2 schools I would be working in. They were all really nice, the children in every class wanted to say 'hello' to me, and some were brave enough to tell me their names and ages in English, which was very cute. It seems that there would be some conflict with my classes, where I'd need to be in 2 places at the same time! Which unfotunatley would be slight inpossible! So I sugested maybe doing one week at one school and the next at the other. This works out better, but it seems that i'm doing about 14 hours (over 2 weeks) English, and the other 10 hours in other lessons, doing what i've got no idea!
At lunch time I went to the canteen. When Brigette had been talking about going to the canteen for lunch, I thought there was one near the offices, or in one of the schools, but actually, it seems there is a big canteen that all the primary schools in the area use, and they all go there by bus. It's a bit weird, but the food is very nice!

On Friday night I went to stay at Brigette P's house for the weekend. She has two daughters, Maryléne who is 20 and Anne-Sophié who is 18. They were all really nice to me, We went to Brigette's parents house for dinner on Friday, and I went with Anne-Sophie to meet some of her friends, which was good. We played pool, and Then Anne-Sophie decided that we should all speak English for 20mins. It was really strange, cos they were speaking English with a french accent, I started speaking like that too! And I kept answering in French when they asked me questions in English!

On Saturday, I spent alot of the day on the internet which was good, then in the evening Maryléne's friends came over and they taught me how to play poker! It was quite confusing, even when I read the rules in English, I still mannaged to lose, (good job we wern't playing for real monny!) Though I did teach them the word 'Fold' for when you can't play anymore, they don't have a word in french, they just put their cards down which seems a bit boring to me!!

On Sunday I slept really late, It wasn't entirely my fault. In France (or round here at least) they have shutters on the window insted of curtins, ( though my flat has curtians!) which block out all the light...compleatly it's pitch black. I woke up on Sunday, and cos it was still dark in the room, I assumed it was really early, so I went back to sleep again, When I woke up the next time it was still really dark, but I looked at my watch this time and saw it was nearly 11:30!!!! I reckon it was probably about 9 or 10 when I first woke up but cos it was so dark i didn't know!!

In the afternoon I went on the internet again, and then later Maryléne and her friends took me to this cocktail bar they liked. It was in Belgium! Apparently they are only about 20 mins drive from the boarder, I hadn't realised it was soo close! The bar was really nice, sorta Hawaiian themed, with all sorts of fruit cocktails. I had a Strawberry and Pineapple one which was yummy!!!

Anyway it's getting late now, everyone will be going soon, and I can't really be bothered to write anymore! I'll try to write some more tomorrow maybe

My 1st week in France - Tuesday

Tuesday 25th September

Breakfast at the hotel was only served until 9am, so we had to get up early, (for me anyway since I was used to not getting up much before 10!!) It was just pastries, which I really like, that's one good thing about the french, having cakes for breakfast!! There was no tea which was a bit annoying, (well there was tea but no hot water!!) We checked out off the hotel, but they let us leave our cases there which was good, as we still had 3 hours until the train to Aulnoye.

We went to the station (as the hotel was right oppersite) to buy the train tickets. It seems the machines at the stations here only take cards, which is a bit anoying as I like to pay with cash, but which happened to be quite good for me because it meant Dad had to pay with his Mastercard!!!

We went for another wander round the town, and then it started raining so we went inside a shopping centre, but it was quite small, I was stating to feel quite tired by this point, so sat down to have a rest. It was only 11am, so we still had 2 hours to fill, we all looked at the maps of Lille to see what else we could do. Mum spotted that there was a Zoo which had free entry not to far away, so we went there. Unfortunatley it took nearly 45 mins to get there, and to find the entrance, so we could only look round quickly. It was quite small, but it had a few birds, and monkeys, and zebra and things. Was very nice considering we didn't have to pay!

It was then nearly 12:30 so we went back to the hotel to get our cases and then to the station. it was then I realised I was very glad we got the tickets earlier, there were loads of people in the station, and we would have probably missed the train if we'd had to queue to get tickets then! Unfortunatley our train left from the platform furthest away from the station, so we had to pull the cases all the way, and only just made the train! It was just over an hour until we arrived in Aulnoye, I think I fell asleep on the train for a little while!

When we arrived we (or rather Mum and Dad!) had to carry the suitcases down some steps, under the tracks, and up the other side! When we came out, there were 2 women who cme over and asked if I was Rebecca, I said I was and they introduced themselves as Brigette, (They are both called Brigette! one is Brigette L, the other Brigette P!) They took us to my new flat, which is litrally right across the road from the station!

I'll try to describe the flat a bit, but when I get my own internet I'll take pictures and put them on here. Well, after what Mum had been saying about the bedsits in Ashford, I was feeling really worried that I would end up with something horrible, damp and dirty, but in fact it is lovely. It has a wardrobe, which easily fits all my clothes in, a desk, a bed, 2 bedside tables, a bookshelf, a table, 2 chairs, a seperate bathroom, though there is only a handheld shower which is a bit anoying becase I like to have showers rather than baths. The kitchen...well it's not really a kitchen, more just a hob and a sink in a cupboard, with a fridge underneath, nevertheless it's all clean and tidy, especially after Mum cleaned all the surfaces! (Thank you Mum!!) And it's just fine for me, plus there is enough space if people stay over to sleep on the floor!

Right so having arrived at my appartment I then had to go to the wardens office (the guy who looks after the building) to sign loads of stuff. Mum and Dad were still with me, and the Brigettes were managing to speak in french and in english, which was more than I was doing! I was despratly trying to speak French, but it was really hard to find the right words to use.I actually have no idea what I was signing, it looked like the rental agreement, but I'm not sure what it said, so I hope there are no problems! Mum and Dad still didn't have anywhere to stay the night, and there were no hotels in Aulnoye, but the Brigettes said they would find somewhere.

There was a bit of a problem when they realised that I didn't have insurance for the building, (I have travel insurance for myself and my possesions, but it is not easy to insure an appartment, when you don't know where it is or what it is like!) and after a lot of discussion in french, which I didn't really understand, it was decided that I needed to open a back account and get insurance through the bank. The next thing I knew we were walking round the corner to the bank, and half an hour later I had an account! I only had a vauge idea what they were all saying, but managed to work out that I have an account for 7 months with a debit card so I can get money out, and insurance which will cost 6€ per month. After signing some more things, and geting photo copies of my passport it was all done. I am so glad the Brigettes were there, cos I never would have been able to do that by myself!

After ,we went back to the appartment and unpacked a bit. Then the Brigettes took us to there office to sign some more things, and to try to find somewhere for Mum and Dad to stay. After a lot more discussions in french, during which me, Mum and Dad just sat in the corner, not reqlly knowing what was going on, it was decided that Mum and Dad could stay in the Hotel School in the town. It's not actually a hotel, more a training centre for people to work in hotels, but it has a few rooms, and Mum and Dad could stay in one of them. We would also be able to eat in the canteen that evening.

Brigette L drove us back to my flat, though we stoped at the supermarket next door first to get a few bits quickly. It was then that I realised that the French don't have fresh milk only UHT milk, which takes some getting used to!!! Mum and Dad picked up their suitcase and we went to the Lyceè Hôteliere, which was in the centre of the town, about 20 mins walk away. The people at the school were really nice, one of the students spoke very good english, so he was in charge of looking after us. Their room was really lovely. The only problem was that they had to be back by 10pm each night becaise that was when they locked the gates! We ate in the canteen which was a fairly good meal, and then Mum and Dad walked me back to my appartment. I didn't have a kettle yet, so I had to boil water on the stove to make tea!! We made up my bed, but I didn't have a duvet, so I used my sleeping bag insted!

After Mum and Dad left, I looked around, and I suddenly realised that this was it, I was going to be staying here, in a country where I couldn't completly understand the language, with people that (however nice they were) I didn't know, away from all my family and friends, and quite sudenly I just burst into tears, I just stood there in the middle of the room crying for about 15 mins, before deciding that I really should get ready for bed, which I did, Mum and Dad phoned about 5 mins after to say that they had got back OK, and to say goodnight, which nearly set me off again, but I calmed myself down, put on my laptop to listen to music, and wrote a list of all the things I needed to get the next day, (there was quite a lot!) before finally going to sleep;

My 1st week in France - Monday Part 2

Right I have the computer for about 1 hour so I can continue with my week. I should point out that I have discovered that the keyboards in France are different to the ones in England, so if anything is spelt really wrong then it's because I'm not used to this keyboard, (and it's not just an excuse for my terrible spelling honest!)

Right so we arrived in Lille, (me with extra chocolate down my top!) and went to our hotel which was only about a 10 minute walk from the station. I was already to speak my first bit of french to the man in reception, but he obviously heard us talking in English beforhand because as we approached he spoke to us in English! And his english was far better then my french would have been! The hotel was quite nice, we had a tripple room, and it was fine for one night. We dumped the suitcases and went for a wander round Lille.

The town itself is really nice with lots of old buildings and cobbled streets, we had a look in the shops and found a nice sandwich bar to eat in, which led to my second attempt at french, at which the guy just looked slightly puzzled, until I asked in english, then he understood!

We had a look in the big shopping centre, (Very nice with lots of shops!!) and then went back to the hotel for a rest, (well, it was 5pm, I'd been up since 6:45 and I'd lost 1hour time difference!!!)

About 8 we decided to go to find somewhere to eat , we found a really nice resturant and so I went to try my 3rd attempt at French, I asked for a table in french....The waiteress replied in English!!! I was going to ask for a French menu, but I was too tired to try anymore french, and it was easier with the english, at least I could be sure what I was eating!! By the time we had finished eating it was after midnight, so we went back to the hotel and went to sleep!

My 1st week in France - Monday

I'm not sure how long I can be on this computer, am hoping to go have some lunch soon, so this will be part 1 of my 1st week in France, I'll add more when I can.

I'll go through day by day, so it doesn't get too confusing.

Monday 24th September

It was raining, and I was all ready to go with my suitcases packed. I had 3 and Mum and Dad had 1, Dad then thought that we might not be able to get on the Eurostar with all the cases, and so wanted me to leave one behind. After opening once case and deciding that no, there wasn't anything I could possibly leave behind and so we would have to take all 4 cases.

After saying goodbye to Natasha and Nan we drove to Ashford station. Due to a mixup with the train times, I thought that the Eurostar train was leaving at 10.23 and so we would need to be there by 9:50 in order to check in, therfore I had a bit of a panic sunday night when I realised that the train we had planned to get from Ashford, (9:11) wouldn't get us there in time and so we needed to get the 8:41 train, which ment us leaving by 7:45, so that we could drive to the station, unload the car, and then Mum could drive home, and walk back again. I've never been to Ashford station that early in the morning, it was very cold, very wet and very busy, And we had to wait in the rain for over 1/2 hour. Mum came back about 8:20 looking surprisingly dry for someone who'd walked, But she'd got a lift, which was good cos she probably wouldn't have made in otherwise.

So anyway we got on the train and went to Waterloo. We went to the check in and Dad gave me the tickets. It was then that I saw that the train was actually leaving at 10:43 and so we could have got the later train... grrr! We had about 1 hours wait so we got something to eat and drink, before bording the train. It was then that we realised that none of our seats were together, Luckily Dad and I managed to swap arround and sit togther but Mum was a few rows in front.

It was a relativly simple journey execpt I managed to pour hot chocolate down my new white top, so I have to wash that at some point!

After 1hour 40 mins we arrived in Lille, France.....

THIS IS IT!!!!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Well it's finally here, in less then 23 hours time I will be on the Train leaving Waterloo, and England, on my way to Aulnoye!!

I'm currently printing out loads of photos to take with me, (got about 100!!!) So no matter what my flat looks like I can cover the walls with photos!

I'm pretty much packed, though there are still a few things I somehow need to stuff in!! I got some Vacuum bags from Argos, which are great, it means I can take all my bedding, and towels (since the flat doesn't have any!) I've managed to pack most of my clothes in the bags, too, though I still have 3 big suitcases!! (Thank God Mum and Dad are coming too, I wouldn't be able to bring half the stuff without them!!) I have no idea how on earth I'm going to get it all home again, but I don't need to worry about that yet!!!

I don't think it's quite hit me yet that I'm actually going, it's weird I keep thinking of all the little things I'll be missing, like English food, and reading newspapers, and watching TV (though I think I may have been able to persuade my Dad to get a DVD recorder, so he's gonna record stuff and send it to me!!!) I think the point it will actually hit will be on Thursday when Mum and Dad go Home, and I have to stay behind. That is the day I am least looking forward too, but I've decided that I'm not going to actually decorate my flat in any way until then, that way I'll have something to do on Thursday evening, and Friday.

I don't know yet how long it will be until I can get Internet, hopefully if I have a phone line, it shouldn't be that long. I've found a company called Neuf, that has wireless Internet, phone, and TV for 30Euros a month, I think it works in Aulnoye (Well at least the town was in the list of places it covered!) It sounds pretty good, I wasn't actually aiming for wireless Internet since it is just me in the flat, but I have always had wireless Internet on my laptop, so it would be strange to have a wire in it! And the phone and TV sounds good as well, I wasn't actually going to get a TV, but apparently I get TV on my laptop, (and if anyone has a spare TV they want to lend me...I wouldn't say no!!) Especially as it means I might actually get to see the 4th series of Lost (I don't have Sky, so missed the entire 3rd series, if it wasn't for finding the transcripts online, I wouldn't have a clue what was going on!!) Apparently they also have 'Heroes' in France as well, they are just about to start the 2nd series, although unfortunately due to the BBC being so far behind, I haven't seen the end of the 1st series!!! Which means I'm just likely to get really really confused!!

Unfortunately it may take up to 4 weeks to install it....What am I going to do without Internet for 4 weeks!!! I'm hoping that there will be Internet in the school or something that I can used, failing that, I'll be in the library!!! The strangest thing will be not having anything to do in the evenings!! No TV and no Internet = one bored Becca!!!! For this reason I have got about 10 DVD's to watch, so that should keep me amused for a few days!!!

Well that's it from me in England, Tomorrow I leave for France, I'm staying one night in Lille, before travelling to Aulnoye on Tuesday, I get the keys to my flat, and after dumping my stuff, I'm going to look round the town. My responsable said that she would find a hotel for Mum and Dad, although, she hasn't told me if she's found anywhere, so that could be interesting!! In which case Tuesday afternoon will be spent looking for a hotel for Mum and Dad!! Wednesday will probably be spent buying all the stuff I need for the flat, and food (that is quite important!!!) And then on Thursday we'll travel back up to Lille so Mum and Dad can get the train back Home, and then I'll get the train back to Aulnoye :(

Hopefully I might be able to find somewhere with Internet next weekend, so I can write about my flat and stuff, If not I'll update when ever I can.....

Till the next time....

A bientot!

Have Accommodation!!!

Yeay I have somewhere to live!!!

I got an e-mail yesterday from my responsable saying that she had spoken to a letting agency and could I transfer some money to a french bank account. I was like, hang on a minute why, I'm not just gonna hand over money for no reason. So I emailed her back asking what it was for, and she replied that she had found me a Studio Apartment, and so I needed to pay 2 months rent as a security deposit, 520EUR (I just realised there is no Euro sign on my keyboard!!) Plus the agency fees, for them finding it, which is 260EUR, It's a bit annoying that I have to pay the agency fees, (I'm hoping if I ask nicely I might be able to get my dad to pay that!!) but at least I have somewhere to live, and the rent seems to be only 260EUR (£179) a month which is waaaaaaaaaaay less then the £310 I was paying all last year!!

Unfortunately I have no idea where abouts in the town it is, or what it is like, I presume it will be furnished, and at least have a bed, wardrobe, drawers, chairs, table, bathroom and kitchen, (with fridge, stove, sink, oven, possibly microwave, kettle, toaster, washing machine) and preferably it'll have some cooking utensils and cookware and plates, cutlery and bed linen and stuff, or else I'll have to spend a lot of money buying it all which I don't really want to do.

It would also be brilliant if it already had water and electricity and a phone line so I can set up the Internet, but I'll guess I just have to wait and see, (fingers crossed!)

Well all I really have to do now is spend the next week panicking.....um sorry I meant packing of course!!!

Might have accommodation maybe....?!?

Well I finally got an e-mail back from my responsable, after e-mailling her twice in the past week! The 1st thing she said was in English...Don't Worry! So I am putting complete faith in her, that she will find accommodation for me...she said she was looking, and that I might be able to live at the collage... but only during the week...well that's not very helpful! I would actually like to have somewhere more permanent if possible!!! I hope she can find somewhere soon!!

I've also now got my NUS Extra card, which seemed a great idea to get at the time, cos it also included the ISIC, and it seemed from the NUS website that it was the only way to get the ISIC, I then found out after I ordered it, that I could have actually got the ISIC direct from the ISIC website for £1 cheaper! The Nus extra card has ISIC written on it, but it looks different, I just hope they accept it in France, or else that will be a waste of £10!

The British council also have kindly sent me another copy of the instructions for how to translate my birth certificate (the original was in my suitcase!) so now I can do that. I'm gonna scan all the important documents and save them on my laptop, so that way I'll always have a copy!

The main thing I need to do now is pack!!! Hmmm trying to fit 7 months worth of stuff in 3 suitcases.....fun fun!!!!

Only 11 days to go!!! AHHHH!!!!!

FOUND IT!!!!

Found my Ticket!! It was in the cupboard with all the catalogs.....obviously...why didn't I think of looking there!!!

I'm working my way through my list of things to do....I've written to the Headteachers of the schools, I've e-mailed my contact in Aulnoye to let her know when I'm coming (no reply yet though :( ) I've sorted out insurance for whilst I'm there (over£200, woah!!) I've brought a Youth discount railcard, which should hopefully be sent to my home soon, and I've brought a ISIC (International Student Identity Card) so hopefully I can get lots of lovely discounts whilst I'm in France!!

Still got a fair bit to do though, and I haven't even thought about what I'm taking with me yet...Think that will be something for me to do the week before I go!!

Got my Ticket!! Lost my Ticket!!!!

So I finally got round to buying my train ticket last Friday, It was only £40, which still isn't as good as the £30 I could have got if I'd brought the ticket 3 weeks ago, but Mum paid for it anyway! (I did try to pay for it honest, but the site just wouldn't accept my card!!)

The Tickets arrived yesterday...return tickets for Mum and Dad, (so they can help me carry stuff over, and settle in) and a single for me, Leaving Waterloo at 10:43, arriving at Lille Europe at 13:24 on Monday 25th September. I opened them, showed them to Mum, and then left them in the kitchen.

That's the last time I saw them....Mum and Dads are still in the Kitchen....but mine has disappeared! I have no idea where it has gone, Mum tidied up the kitchen, but says that she hasn't seen it, I've looked everywhere but can't find it either!!!! AHHH!! This is not a good start, at this rate I won't even get to France!!!!

I've e-mail the contact at the school to say when I will be arriving, but haven't heard anything yet...she said that she would find me somewhere to live...I hope she has!!!

Well here's hoping my ticket turns up...or else this will be a very short blog!!!

3 Weeks to go!!!

I know it's not exactly 3 weeks but i'm gonna be away at the weekend so thought I'd write this now!!

I can't believe i've only got a few weeks now before I go!! It seemed really far away before I went to Canada, I could say 'I'm going to France in September, and it was ages away...well now it is September (practically!) and I am soooo unprepared for going!!

I currently have a masive list of things to do before I go, the 1st of which is book my train ticket, I think i've put it off cos once i've done that it makes it more final! I also have to contact the person who e-mailed me before to let her know when i'll be arriving, write letters to the Directors of the schools to introduce myself, sort out insurance, copy all important documents, translate my birth certificate, take pictures of my local area, buy loads of stuff, work out what clothes I want to take....plus probably other stuff I can't think of right now!!

AHHHHH!!!!

In other news I have been in contact with an American girl who will be in the town near me, and we have arrange to met up sometime in the 1st few weeks, so that will be nice, something to look forward too! I'm hoping to contact a few more people too, so hopefully I'll have a few people near me to meet up with.

Will write more soon, (maybe when i've actually done something!!)

Arrête has arrived!!

Finally I got my arrête! I now know exactly which schools I will be working in! My time will be split between 'Ecole Stievenart' and 'Ecole Joliot Curie', The blog on the left is from Joilot Curie about when the 9 year olds went to the beach, it doesn't matter if you can't read the french, the pictures are good, I can't believe that in 8 weeks time, I will be teaching some of those kids!! AAAH!

I got some more infomation from the British Council today together with a book about being a language assistant, they also included contact details for the previous assistants, which as I said in my last post, the town I'm in has never had any previous assistants, so thats not too helpful for me, but there was someone who was in a town near me, so I might e-mail them and see if they have any tips.

In the meentime, I'm trying to get together 'English things' to take with me, I went to Windsor on Sunday, and got a few postcards and a model London bus and taxi, I want to get a map of the UK and an 'English' Bear as well, and then need to take photos of Ashford, and my house and family and stuff.

Oh and by the way, The police phoned to say that they couldn't find my suitcase, it hadn't been handed in anywhere, and the was no CCTV on the train so they don't know who took it. It is now extreamly unlikely that i'll ever get it back, which is a shame. I now need to start replacing all the stuff that was in there, which is something I hadn't exactly buggeted for, and is very annoying.

Anyway that's about it from me now!

Oh if you want to see the photos of the town it's at http://aulnoye.free.fr/sommaire.htm

Little Bear Lost

The title will become clear later in the post. First I wanted to update people on what I've been up to since the last post. I got another e-mail today from my 'responsable' in France who said that she would find accommodation for me in Auloyne, so I don't have to worry, which is good, I may not know exactly where abouts I'll be staying, but at least I won't be left on the street! I also asked whether she had the contact details for previous assistants so I could contact them to find out more information, but she said that unfortunately she doesn't as I am the 1st assistant they have had!! I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not? What do you think?

At least I have a better idea of what to do with the wonderful children now, after my course last week. It was really good, I got to meet loads of people, (unfortunately don't really remember most of them now, and not very many were going to Lille!) We had to prepare a lesson in groups, Ours was on 'Clothes', so that's one lesson sorted! We also learnt how to give really simple instructions in English....(Listen.....and Repeat!) This will probably be the hardest part of teaching...making sure our language can be understood, really having to think about what we are saying...it was OK in front of a group of 20 year olds who knew perfectly well what we were saying...but a group of 7 year olds with only a very basic knowledge of English might be a bit trickier! Nevertheless it was very useful, and I am sure I will use some of the ideas in my lessons.

Unfortunately the whole week was marked by my train journey home. I got on the train at 15:28 and put my suitcase on the luggage rack, In fact I was really pleased cos the rack was empty, so I could put my suitcase on the bottom rather than have to lift it. I found my seat and sat down...put on my music...and started reading my book. The train journey was fairly uneventful until just outside Crewe when there was trouble with the points or something and we had to stop for nearly 45 mins. I wasn't too bothered it just meant I could read for longer! Then just outside Milton Keynes we got told that there was a problem at Harrow and the line was closed, and so the train was terminating at Milton Keynes. By now we were about 2 hours behind, (I should have been on the train towards Ashford by now) But there was going to be another train to take us to Euston. After waiting another 1/2 hour we could get off the train....so I got up....went to the luggage rack....NO SUITCASE....in fact there were no cases there at all. I looked on the platform...no suitcase, so I reported it to one of the staff, they just took me into an office and told me to go into the customer service office at Euston. It was then I realised what was actually in the case...along with my clothes, make up and notes from the course was Georgie, my Teddy bear (well I say mine, she actually belongs to the whole family) I phoned home and told them...in tears at this point, and you know, not one person on the platform asked if I was alright, or even looked at me at all...I suppose they just thought they'd keep out the way of the hysterical girl walking up and down the platform! Anyway I got on the train to Euston (which was the longest 45mins of my life) and went to the Customer Services office, the lady there was really rude, and unhelpful, I told her what happened and she just told me to wait. So I sat for about 20 mins before she said that she'd phoned Milton Keynes and it wasn't there, and there wasn't anything else she could do. I asked if she could give me the names of the other stations so I could try phoning them, and she acted although I'd asked her to search for the suitcase herself! Eventually she gave them to me, and I got on the tube to Vauxhall. I'd just got to the platform when the fast train home left...It was a mark of how bad I felt, that by that point I didn't even care, I just sat and waited for the next train 20 mins later. I should have been home by 8pm instead I eventually got home at 11:30pm. I felt awful and couldn't sleep at all that night, it was horrible. The next day (Friday) I phoned round all the stations on the route but none of them had it, so I phoned the British Transport Police and reported it stolen. The lady I spoke to was really nice, and took all the details, and said someone would investigate it. Unfortunately I haven't heard anything since, and it is looking less and less likely that I'll see it again.

What really annoys me is that there was nothing really of value in the case, (money wise anyway, Georgie to us, is priceless) I mean there was mostly notes and books from the course, which is no use to anyone ( I contacted the Uni, and they sent me another copy of the notes, so that's OK) Clothes for 4 days, which included my Roehampton sweatshirt, which unless you go to Roehampton, is kinda pointless, even Georgie, although valuable to us, to anyone else is quite old and grubby. The most valuable thing is probably the suitcase itself, as it's brand new, I only got it for my birthday, and this was actually the first time I had really used it (apart from when I went home at Easter) It's just really annoying now more than anything else, thinking of all the things I have to replace, my hairbrush, my makeup, my pencil case, My phone charger (this is the most annoying, I can't use my phone at the moment, as it has no battery) as well as my clothes. Georgie is of course irreplaceable, there is a big Georgie size hole where she should be on my bed. I think (or at least I hope) the stuff should be insured, so hopefully I won't have to spend a fortune replacing it all.

Anyway I hope this acts as a warning to people to always keep an eye on your suitcases on trains, if you don't want the same to happen to you.

I've just realised that the part about my suitcase is longer than the parts actually about France, but I guess it's kinda related, If I hadn't been going to France, I wouldn't have been on the course, and I wouldn't have lost my case. (that's actually made me feel quite sad, mustn't think about it like that, not a good start to my year in abroad!)

I will update if I hear anything about my case, (or anything else about France)

Oh, by the way, I still haven't received my 'Arrete' so have no actual official conformation of where I'm going yet, which is slightly worrying!

Anyway more later

Maps of where I'm going

Ok so you can't really see but that red circle is where the village is , I think that the grey area in the middle of the map is the whole village, the train station is at the bottom in the centre. I think one of the schools might be on the orange road just to the right of the station.

Well I had to zoom out quite alot to get this picture, but the red circle is the general area, see what I meen about big white space!! It's about 1 hour from Lille, 2 hours from the coast and about 1/2 hour from the belgium boarder.

Introduction to the middle of nowhere

Hello

Well this is my 1st post in my new blog, I had the idea of doing a blog while I'm in France, it means I can keep in touch with everyone easily, and you can all find out what I'm doing!

Well I'm obviously not in France yet, but I thought I'd start at the beginning, with the build up to going to France, (How often I write here when I'm actually in France will be another matter, but I hope I can update it regularly!)

Just in case anyone doesn't know why on earth I'm going to spend 7 months of my life in France, I'd better explain: As part of my French degree at Uni, I have to spend a year in France, I had the option of either going to a French university or being a Language Assistant in a french school. As soon as I was told the options, I knew that being an assistant was exactly what I wanted to do. I sent my application off in December, and then began the long long wait to find out where I was going. In April I found out that I would definitely be going to 1-2 primary schools in the 'Acadamie' of Lille, but that wasn't very helpful as the area is quite big and I still had to wait to find out exactly where I would be going.

Then yesterday I got an e-mail from someone in France saying that I had been posted to 2 primary schools in the town of 'Aulnoye' (pronounced All-nwah)

I was really excited and immediately looked on multimap to find out where it was, it was then I found that it appeared to be in the middle of a big white space! After searching online I could only find a few sites about the town, (which has a population of 9,000) and appears to have practically nothing there apart from a train station!
(actually tell a lie, It does seem to have a swimming pool somewhere near by!) I think in a few hours I had exhausted all the sites possible and I still wasn't any the wiser about what I could actually do there!!

The only bright spot is that after posting on a forum for assistants I was told that it is only about 1 hour away by train from Lille and Paris, and 1/2 hour away from Valenciennes which is the nearest big town, and quite a few assistants are posted there, (in fact I know of 3 from the facebook group) which is good and hopefully means I shouldn't be too lonely!

I sent an e-mail back to the women saying that I accept the post, and asking about accommodation, haven't heard anything back yet, hopefully will soon, I must say they were leaving it a bit late, The schools break up for the summer today!! And apparently it's really hard to get in contact with the teachers during the summer, and they don't go back until 4th Sept!! All I want to know is whether I have somewhere to live or whether I need to find somewhere myself!!

Anyway, I might try posting some maps so you can see where abouts I'm gonna be! Right now I guess I'm feeling a little disappointed, I was so looking forward to finding out where I'd be and I guess kinda hopping for a bigger town or at least a bit closer to Lille, but at least I know now, and I'll just have to make the best of the situation.

Will post more soon, I'm going up to Lancaster next week to learn how to actually teach the 'wonderful' little children, so hopefully I'll get some idea of what I'm actually meant to do, and maybe find some more people who will be living near me!
